Wimbledon Final 2023: Advent of a promising new era.

Wimbledon Final 2023: Novak Djokovic Vs Carlos Alcaraz

The Numero Uno Carlos Alcaraz produced a complete masterclass to win his maiden Wimbledon by defeating Novak Djokovic at the All England Club. In an epic battle that was fought for 4 hours and 42 minutes, Alcaraz emerged victorious after a incredible turnaround against the winner of 23 grand slams, Novak Djokovic. He was a set down after first set, but came back strong to win the Wimbledon men’s final1-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

Historic resemblance!

15 years back, at the same battlefield, another Spaniard had claimed his maiden Wimbledon title. Rafael Nadal was aiming for the victory, but it wasn’t going to be easy as he was pitted against the GOAT, Roger Federer. In the run up to men’s Wimbledon final 2008, Federer was riding on the back of 5 consecutive Wimbledon titles and 7 other grand slams under his belt. Nadal on the other side was yet to taste success at Wimbledon. Still, he defeated Federer in a 5-set thriller which is widely regarded as not only the best men’s Wimbledon final but also the best tennis match ever played.

On Sunday, Alcaraz was playing against a player with 23 grand slams, a winning streak of 45 matches at Wimbledon and was undefeated at Wimbledon in last 5 years. The odds were against Alcaraz, but he managed to pull off a stunner.

Match highlights

Alcaraz was off to a very anxious start and was broken twice by Djokovic. This resulted in him losing the first set 1-6.

Djokovic boasted an amazing win record of 78-0 record after winning the opening set.

Despite this, Alcaraz dragged the second set to a tie-breaker and then won it, banking on his improved return.

He continued to improve his game and broke Djokovic twice in the third set. Alcaraz won the fifth game of this set, which was a marathon one with 13 deuces and seven break-points.

Djokovic came back to win the fourth set, but Alcaraz won the decider and the match.

Djokovic was courteous enough to accept the result and give credit to his opponent. “He was a deserved winner today, no doubt. I’ve won some epic finals that I was very close to losing, maybe this is kind of even-steven.”, said Djokovic after the match.

The biggest compliment for Alcaraz, I think was when Djokovic admitted that, he has not played a player like him ever. Ad we all know that he has played against the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

The buzzing tennis sensation: Carlos Alcaraz

At the age of 20, Alcaraz has won a dozen ATP Tour-level singles titles. This included two grand slams as well, 2022 US Open and 2023 Wimbledon. Riding his win at the 2022 US Open last year, Alcaraz also became the youngest man in history and the first teenager in the Open Era to sit on the top of singles rankings.

By winning the Wimbledon final against Djokovic, he has proved to the world that he is going to be much more than just a sensation.

Promising New Era of Tennis!

In last 2 decades, there have only been four men’s singles winners of Wimbledon. In 2002 Australian Lleyton Hewitt won the title other than – Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray or Rafael Nadal. But on Sunday, 20-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz got into the big league and ended the supremacy established by ‘The Big Three’ (nickname in tennis for the trio of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal).

Carlos Alcaraz, not only won the crowd over at Centre Court, he also won his first Wimbledon and millions of new fans. Djokovic was invincible on Centre Court for a decade, Alcaraz brought an end to his reign and ushered the world of tennis into a new era, outside of the clout of ‘The Big Three’!
